This is one of the things that is not really known about as to how the name at that time came about. The first reference appears to have been on a plot plan of the area in the mid 1830's. I have not found as of yet a specific reference as to how this came to be.

was told about this site. Very interesting story. I'm from Singapore - the 'little red dot' in South-east Asia. How did the name Singapore come about in Michigan? There's no mention of it in your story. Could you clued me in? Thanks!

We have collected 6 of these notes over the years. There are a few on display (not for sale) in our antique store in Galesburg, Michigan. Arrangements have been made to donate them to a Michigan Museum after some time on display at the store. Feel free to stop in and see them. Items such as these need to be preserved for future generations.

Great telling of the story! I have the same yarn on my website, but I have to admit that you put all the details into this.

Thanks for preserving the history: I had to find it at the State Library in Lansing, which is not convenient for everyone.

As far as cashing them in at an official bank, this will not happen, since none of these banks no longer exist. So officially, these notes are not worth anything.

However, they are worth something to a collector, for their historical value. Of course the value would depend on condition and the fact that the note is real, and has not been altered in someway.
